MIDI channels

Every instrument keeps one home channel for good. When you swap gear, change the trigger source's output channel (for example a Digitakt MIDI track), never the instrument. Audio follows the slot: gear swapped in takes the interface input of what it replaced.

Ch Instrument In Out Set it here / notes
1 Behringer K2 1 - Rear-panel MIDI channel switches. MIDI IN/THRU only, no MIDI OUT, so no out channel. Played by a Digitakt MIDI track set to 1.
2 Dreadbox Typhon 2 - Global Settings > MIDI CHANNELS > INPUT = 2 (never ALL). MASTER CLOCK = External. The manual's menu lists only an input channel.
3 Korg M1 (1993) 3 3 Set in GLOBAL mode, F5-1 (Global MIDI channel) -- verified in the OCR'd owner's manual 2026-09-23. In Combination/Multi use, each Timbre also has its own receive channel (Combination F2-1 MIDI CH); only Timbres on the Global channel sound from the M1's own keyboard.
4 Donner Essential B1 4 4 Hold STEP 4 at power-on (sets in and out together, per manual). Own channel, so swapping K2 -> B1 means pointing the Digitakt track at 4. Clock: hold D#2 at power-on for DIN, or leave Automatic.
5 Akai Timbre Wolf 5 5 MIDI Ch (Voice 1 channel). Per manual, voices 2-4 answer on the next three channels, so 5-8 are all reserved for it (voice 1 = 5). In Poly/Unison mode only 5 is used, but 6-8 stay reserved.
6 Akai Timbre Wolf (voice 2) part of the block above
7 Akai Timbre Wolf (voice 3) part of the block above
8 Akai Timbre Wolf (voice 4) part of the block above
9 Sonicware Liven Texture Lab 9 9 RX.CH = 9 and TX.CH = 9 in the MIDI settings (manual: ALL / CH.01-16 / NONE).
10 Behringer RD-9 Rhythm Designer 10 10 Owner: RD-9 sends on 10 and is the master clock (SYNC = INTERNAL). MIDI IN channel: 10 (or 'Out', which follows the out channel). SOFT THRU off -- per the manual it turns MIDI OUT into a second THRU.
11 Roland TR-505 11 11 Verified in the OCR'd owner's manual 2026-09-23: in the MIDI function, set OMNI OFF (Down key) and the receive channel with Up/Down (1-16). The TRANSMIT channel is per drum voice (factory: 10 for every voice) -- set each voice to 11, otherwise it transmits on the RD-9's channel 10. Drum voice key numbers (25-99) are set there too.
12 E-mu Proteus MPS 12 12 Chosen 2026-10-10 by the assistant at the owner's request when the Proteus took the Korg M1's slot (12 was the spare); accepted by the owner the same day. Set the channel number at the top left of the main screen (basic channel; manual 'MIDI Channel Selection') and Master > MIDI MODE = Poly, so it answers only on 12 (Omni would also play the RD-9's ch 10 drums if those ever reach it). The M1 keeps 3. Point the Digitakt MIDI track that played the M1 at 12.
13 Elektron Analog Four MKII 13 13 MIDI CONFIG > CHANNELS > AUTO CHANNEL. Fed from the Digitakt THRU (raw RD-9 stream, plus the FCB1010 since 2026-10-10). SYNC: CLOCK + TRANSPORT RECEIVE on, SEND off. Since 2026-10-10 (owner accepted, see controller_maps.yaml): PRG CH RECEIVE on; CHANNELS: PROGRAM CHANGE IN CHANNEL = 15 (the FCB1010's pattern-select channel, shared with the Digitakt). No synth-track channel may be 10.
14 Elektron Digitakt Mk1 14 14 MIDI CONFIG > CHANNELS > AUTO CHANNEL. Middle of the chain: CLOCK + TRANSPORT RECEIVE on AND SEND on. PORT CONFIG: INPUT FROM = MIDI, OUTPUT TO = MIDI, OUT PORT FUNCTIONALITY = MIDI. Audio track channels: none on 10 (OFF if unused). MIDI tracks send on the home channel of whatever they play (1 K2, 2 Typhon, 3 M1, 4 B1, 12 Proteus, ...). Since 2026-10-10 (owner accepted, see controller_maps.yaml): SYNC > PRG CH RECEIVE on; CHANNELS > PROGRAM CHG IN CH = 15 (FCB1010 pattern select, shared with the A4). Leave PRG CH SEND off: its OUT feeds the Thru5 synths, not the A4.
15 Behringer FCB1010 - 15 EurekaPROM PP configuration, Pr (Presets) mode: the program-change channel. A control channel, not an instrument: a preset sends one program change on 15, and the Digitakt and Analog Four both listen for program changes on 15, so one stomp changes both patterns. Expression pedals send on the instruments' own AUTO channels (Ea -> 14 Digitakt, Eb -> 13 Analog Four). Pedal and preset plan: controller_maps.yaml.

Not on a home channel of its own (no settable channel; keep each on its own MIDI line)

  • Roland MC-303 (omni): CORRECTION 2026-09-23 (from the OCR'd owner's manual): the MC-303 has no single settable MIDI channel, so the home channel 12 assigned earlier cannot be set. In normal mode it plays incoming MIDI on ANY channel into the Part selected with PART SELECT (effectively omni). In Sound Module mode each Part has a fixed receive channel (see MIDI Implementation). It TRANSMITS Parts 1-7 on channels 1-7 and the Rhythm Part on channel 10 (fixed). Practical rule: give it its own MIDI line, and don't merge its MIDI OUT into the RD-9/Digitakt chain. Channel 12 is free again. Accepted by the owner 2026-09-23.
  • Akai Rhythm Wolf (fixed: drum voices on ch 10, bass synth on ch 1): No settable channel. Akai's official MIDI implementation page (Akai Japan, dated 2014-12-24; archived copy at https://web.archive.org/web/20170729082239/http://www.akai-pro.jp:80/rhythm-wolf/data/midi.php, saved as sources/akai-rhythm-wolf-midi-implementation.pdf) lists fixed channels: KICK 36, SNARE 38, PERC 40, HH OPEN 42, HH CLOSE 44 on ch 10; BASS SYNTH note 36 on ch 1; velocities 0/42/84/127. So it CANNOT take home channel 15 (released). Its drums collide with the RD-9 (10) and its bass with the K2 (1): give it its own MIDI line, never the RD-9/Digitakt/Thru5 chain.

Generated from midi_channels.yaml. Channel 10 is the RD-9's drums; nothing else listens on it.

Behringer FCB1010: what it sends

Firmware: EurekaPROM (replacement EPROM), PP = Programmable configuration.

Pattern select: program change on channel 15, heard by Elektron Digitakt Mk1 and Elektron Analog Four MKII.

  • Mode: Pr (Presets): pedals 1/6 = channel (set 15C), 2/7 = bank (set b- = no bank CC sent first), pedal 10 on = a program change goes out on every preset change; FP (Favorite Presets) holds 10 one-stomp presets
  • Numbering: Elektron convention: program 0-127 = patterns A01-H16 (program n = bank 'ABCDEFGH'[n // 16], pattern n % 16 + 1; 0 = A01, 16 = B01, 127 = H16). The ingested Digitakt and Analog Four manuals say patterns 'can be changed and queued by sending program change messages' but do not print this table: check one pattern on the unit first.
  • Timing: A program change queues the new pattern; it starts when the playing pattern ends (same as choosing it on the panel).
  • One box or both: One channel = lockstep: both boxes take the same pattern number. To switch only one, turn PRG CH RECEIVE off on the other (MIDI CONFIG > SYNC). Alternative layout if independent switching is used more than lockstep: set each box's PROGRAM CHG IN CH to AUTO (Digitakt 14, A4 13) and flip the FCB's channel live with pedals 1/6.
Pedal Channel CC Target Parameter
Ea 14 74 Elektron Digitakt Mk1 Filter Frequency (active track, via AUTO CHANNEL)
Eb 13 18 Elektron Analog Four MKII Filter1 Frequency (active track, via AUTO CHANNEL)

Other pedal targets (change the pedal's CC to swap one in): Elektron Digitakt Mk1 ch 14 CC 95 Track Level (active track); Elektron Digitakt Mk1 ch 14 CC 82 Delay Send (active track); Elektron Digitakt Mk1 ch 14 CC 83 Reverb Send (active track); Elektron Digitakt Mk1 ch 14 CC 75 Resonance (active track); Elektron Analog Four MKII ch 13 CC 89 Filter1 Resonance (active track); Elektron Analog Four MKII ch 13 CC 92 Delay Send Level (active track); Elektron Analog Four MKII ch 13 CC 95 Track Level (active track).

Left out:

  • Behringer RD-9 Rhythm Designer: Its ingested manual (V 1.0) documents no program-change pattern select, and in this wiring the RD-9 is upstream of the FCB1010, so it receives nothing from it. Revisit if a firmware note says otherwise.
  • E-mu Proteus MPS: It sits on a Thru5 output, which carries only the Digitakt's own MIDI OUT, so the FCB's pedals never reach it. Its four realtime controllers (Master > MIDI Controller Assign) could take a pedal only on a cable that does.

Check on the hardware:

  • MIDI thru/merge in the PP configuration: the EurekaPROM FAQ says it is supported but the PP page shows no on/off step. With the FCB inline, confirm the Digitakt and A4 still follow the RD-9's clock and transport.
  • Calibrate Ea/Eb once (hold pedals 1 + 5 at power-up, display 'CA'); the pedals' value range is not documented for PP.
